Yet, its stock set was identical to the XV (i.e. The 5080 was actually the first true "new" XV architecture. From a waveform perspective, the XV-3080 was basically a XP-30 that supplmented nearly all of the legacy XV/JV waveforms with a number of new waveforms. Fantoms take SRX boards just like the XVs."Īctually, this is not entirely accurate. I would say I haven't heard better strings/brass/orchestral sounds than in the recent Famtoms, they are very clean and tasty. SRX boards are used to expand these (64 MB each).įantom-X have about 5% of the XV waveforms, the rest is totally new.

XV series have a renewed waveform bank and thus have more realistic orchestral sounds. There are about 20 SR-JV80 series cards available (16 MB each). XP-30 adds 3 expansion boards right inside. Looking forward to new layering possibilities, I will also add some expansion cards to spice things up a bit."XP-50/60/80 and JV-1010/1080/2080 have the same sound set. I went ahead and purchased both and got rid of the XV3080.

To the others who added some meaningful advice and opinions to this discussion. So we will chalk up your post as yet another moot point fired off irrationally, as you have added nothing to this thread. I was always told if you have nothing intelligent to add you should not speak. My reference to JJ/TL was evidence it is frequently done and there are many out there I can reference who do the same. Of course the IDIOT of the the forum gets one off, Did I ever state stacking 2 tritons or Rolands produces the sound of JJ/TL, no I stated fools who advise against stacking racks obviously have no idea or concept on the value of stacked sounds. Then there's Eric's idea.check out Sonic Cell!Ĭomparing your homestudio goals to the production work at flyte tyme is CRAZY! But again, its not Jimmy Jam its his dual tritons.:poke: I end up using my Triton rack for 'ear candy' more often than not in tracks where my Kurzweil/Fantom/VI's are covering the 'real' instruments, and Korg's 'Simple Pad' is the glue that holds the song together.Īlternately, I sometimes find myself layering my PC3X with the JP8 strings on the XR and playing for hours. I sold my 5080 when I bought my Fantom XR, and although I love the XR, I'm looking for another 5080 for a couple of reasons - bigger screen (more info) & easier editor mainly.Ĭomparing the XV5080 to a Triton rack? That's hard, because they are totally apples to oranges - their sound palettes are completely different, and I truly believe that they shine at different things - the Korg certainly has a larger selection of etherial / interactive / arpeggiated sounds, but I would venture a guess that the 5080 is a more attractive editing engine, and certainly more realistic acoustic sounds (IMO). Please help as I want to make a decision soon. So definitely the Triton comes in cheaper. Research on used prices for each are as follows (without expansion cards.): I know they both came out around the same time late 1990's early 2000's, so the technology is similar but does one have features that trumps the other? Is one better than the other or are they apples to oranges.

Now comparing the XV5080 to the Triton rack what are the differences between the 2. What is this sample play back the XV5080 boasts of? It provides me with a thick and unique sound pallet not easily reproduced.ĭoes the XV5080 have note worthy enhancements over the XV3080 other than sample play back and 2 additional SRX expansion bays? I have the newer Roland Fantom X7 and Triton Extreme however, I like to layer many patches together for unique sounds, drum loops and patches from various brands. I love the sounds and features but I am looking to add another rack piece to my repertoire that will enhance my layering capabilities as I use the racks to layer sounds together.

One of the beasts of XV series, predecessor to the Fantom series. First off I am a happy owner of a Roland XV3080, I know it is the rack version of the acclaimed Roland XV88. I am looking to add another piece to my home studio either a Roland XV5080 or Korg Triton rack. I am in a little bit of a dilemma and wanted to pose the question to the experts out here.
